Veterinary toxicologist’s tips for care near chemical spill in East Palestine:
There are no veterinary tests available for exposure to vinyl chloride, but veterinarians near the site of the train derailment and chemical spill in East Palestine, Ohio, can perform basic testing on sick pets and livestock, render supportive care and keep comprehensive documentation, says veterinary toxicologist Stephen Hooser.
Pet owners can minimize risk of any chemical exposure by washing pets’ paws in a foot bath and wiping their fur with a damp towel after they have been outdoors, leaving their own shoes off indoors, and giving pets bottled or filtered water instead of tap water, veterinarian Cynthia Maro writes.
