Ohio Animal Advocates is grateful to Representatives Michele Grim and Sara Carruthers for introducing Ohio H.B. 443, which would allow local governments to regulate the sale of puppies in pet stores.

Petland, headquartered in Chillicothe, pushed the Ohio legislature to pass a bill in 2016 that prevents municipalities from banning pet stores from purchasing puppies from puppy mills in Ohio.

As Rep. Grim stated, Ohio H.B. 443 would reverse the 2016 law and give “local communities the right to determine what business practices they deem acceptable or not, such as partaking in the puppy mill trade Under the watch of statewide laws, retailers such as Petland have notoriously engaged in the purchasing of puppies from puppy mills and sold these unhealthy pets to unsuspecting families. Genetic diseases, contagious diseases, all of the above and that presents a financial issue for the consumer but more than that, it’s emotional.”

Ohio Animal Advocates strongly supports Ohio H.B. 443, which will give back to local governments the needed authority to control the influx of puppy mill dogs in Ohio communities.
