Many people who experience domestic violence do not want to leave without their pets. Animals are an integral part of a family, and many don’t want to leave them behind.
That is why it is so important to make a Pet Plan:
1. Establish Pet Custody- Take steps to prove pet custody of your pets, including registrations and vaccinations in your name.
2. Find a Safe Haven- Use OAA’s statewide directory of domestic violence shelters that accommodate for pets.
3. Pack a Pet Safety Kit- Include a few days’ worth of pet food and any other necessary supplies, such as a collar with ID tags, a leash, vaccination records, and medicine.
4. Seek Legal Pet Protection- In most states, pets may be included in protected orders.
