H.B. 33, which requires reporting of animal abuse by social workers, counselors and veterinarians, passed out of the Senate 31-0 and will next go to the Governor’s desk to be signed – this is fantastic news!
Ohio has passed several laws addressing animal abuse in domestic violence situations such as pet protective orders, felony cruelty, and making bestiality a crime. However, if professionals who suspect animal abuse in family violence situations do not report it, these laws are ineffective. This is a critical animal welfare bill to pass now, especially in light of the increase in domestic violence during the COVID-19 pandemic.
OAA played a huge role in getting this bill across the finish line, along with Animal Welfare Institute, HSUS and of course Reps. Lanese and Carruthers – thank you all for making a difference for animals this holiday.
