Partner Profile: The Cocoon

OAA is excited to feature The Cocoon, currently one of only a few domestic and sexual violence shelters in the state to also shelter pets of survivors.  OAA encourages organizations desiring to shelter pets under similar circumstances to contact The Cocoon for ideas on how to stand up a similar program.

Mission: The Cocoon exists to provide safety, healing, and justice for survivors of domestic and sexual violence, their children, their pets, and all others affected by these abuses as well as educational outreach services throughout the community.

The Cocoon is the only domestic and sexual violence agency in Wood County and serves over 700 survivors annually. Services provided by The Cocoon are provided at no cost to survivors and their families throughout their lifetime. Help is available 24/7, 365 days a year.

Safe Pet Program: Survivors can bring their pets with them to the shelter, so they don’t have to choose between protecting themselves or protecting their animals. The Cocoon provides pet-friendly spaces and assists with food and other necessities.  At this time, only pets arriving in shelter with their families can be accommodated.  For those who are fleeing but do not need shelter, community-based services are available such as safety planning, support groups, housing assistance, and medical and legal advocacy. For more information on the Safe Pets Program, call (419) 373-1730. If you are in need of help in Wood County, call (419) 373-1730 and select option #2 to be immediately connected to a Cocoon advocate 24/7.
