A Heart for Animals: Sandy’s Journey with Sunrise Farm Sanctuary

Located in Marysville, Ohio, Sunrise Sanctuary stands as a safe haven for farm animals once neglected, abused, or abandoned. Founded in 2001, the sanctuary has grown into a powerful voice for animal welfare thanks to the dedication of its founder, Mindy Mallett, many volunteers, supporters, and Board members such as Sandy Horvath. For over two decades, many volunteers have worked tirelessly to provide lifelong refuge to farmed and companion animals and restoring their dignity and allowing them to live in peace.

Sandy's journey into animal advocacy began with a deep-rooted compassion for all creatures and a desire to do more than rescue. She wanted to educate and inspire. "I saw so many animals suffering through no fault of their own," she shared. "As primary animal caregiver and Board Treasurer at Sunrise, I am able to show people that animals are sentient beings who deserve love, safety, and respect."

Home to more than 140 animals, including horses, cows, pigs, chickens, ducks, turkeys, goats, donkeys, geese, dogs, and cats, Sunrise Sanctuary operates under a philosophy of lifelong care. Animals are not adopted out or used for breeding. Instead, they live out their natural lives in a peaceful environment free from exploitation. Visitors to the sanctuary often describe a sense of healing and serenity as they witness firsthand the resilience and individuality of each animal.

Beyond direct care, education is a major pillar of Sunrise’s mission. Through public tours, volunteer opportunities, and social media outreach, Sandy and all the volunteers aim to challenge common perceptions about farmed animals and encourage a more compassionate world. "Once people meet these animals and look into their eyes, their whole perspective can change," Sandy said. "They realize that cows like Lily Moo and pigs like Rosie have personalities, preferences, and emotions, just like our dogs and cats."

Running a sanctuary comes with significant challenges, from rising feed costs to medical emergencies and weather-related concerns. Yet, Sandy remains optimistic. “The hard days are always outweighed by the joy of watching an animal who once suffered finally feel safe.”

Support from the community plays a vital role in Sunrise’s success. The partnership with OAA has been important in sharing the mission of Sunrise around the state with all Ohioans.  Donations, sponsorships, and volunteers are key to keeping the sanctuary running smoothly. But Sandy believes the greatest impact comes from small, everyday choices people make. “Whether it’s choosing plant-based meals, advocating for humane policies, or simply being kind to animals, we all have the power to make a difference.”
