Columbus Man Sentenced to Only Six Years for Dogfighting

A Columbus man has been sentenced to nearly six years in federal prison after pleading guilty to charges involving dogfighting and methamphetamine distribution.
According to federal prosecutors, Joel Brown admitted to keeping 11 pit bull-type dogs for fighting purposes in Franklin County. The investigation began in 2024 after a complaint to Columbus Humane prompted law enforcement to search a property where Brown was keeping dogs.
Investigators recovered 12 dogs from the property, many of whom had scarring and other signs associated with dogfighting. Authorities also found treadmills, veterinary medicine and other equipment commonly associated with animal fighting operations. Dogs were reportedly kept outdoors on heavy chains and positioned in a way prosecutors said was intended to encourage aggression.
The investigation also uncovered more than 50 grams of methamphetamine, a shotgun and ammunition, and items associated with drug distribution. Brown, who had a previous felony conviction, pleaded guilty in 2025 to animal fighting and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.
Brown was sentenced to five years and 11 months in federal prison, followed by four years of supervised release.
