Human Bones and Hundreds of Animals Found in Stark County Home

The community of Canton, Ohio, is reeling after investigators uncovered a disturbing scene inside a home on Wertz Avenue. Following a tip from an animal rescue group, authorities executed a search warrant and discovered over 250 living rats, 100 deceased rats, dogs, turtles, and birds—all living among piles of filth, feces, and urine. Even more shocking, a box containing human bones was found inside.

Canton City Prosecutor Katie Erchick Gilbert confirmed the bones were human, though investigators stressed there is currently no evidence of a crime. A forensic expert will examine the remains to determine their origin.

Jackie Godbey, Executive Director of the Stark County Humane Society, described the overwhelming conditions:

“It was just covered in filth and feces and urine. You could see empty bags of trash. The smell was overwhelming.”

While the dogs were in relatively good health, they were housed in squalid conditions, with two kept in a basement. They are now safe at the Stark County Humane Society. The surviving rats have been transported to shelters in Ohio and Indiana for treatment, while turtles and birds have been taken in by other rescue groups.

A man and woman living in the home now face seven felony counts of animal cruelty. They appeared in Canton Municipal Court and are due back next week. The house itself has been deemed unsafe, with authorities ordering that it must be repaired or demolished within 30 days.

Why Cases Like This Matter

Hoarding and cruelty cases like this one highlight the urgent need for stronger animal protection laws in Ohio. Hundreds of animals suffered before being rescued, straining already overburdened shelters. Without tougher legislation and enforcement, these tragedies will continue.

How You Can Take Action

This case in Stark County is shocking, but sadly, it’s not unique. Across Ohio, shelters and rescues are overwhelmed by animals suffering from cruelty, neglect, and hoarding. While rescue groups step in to save lives, long-term change requires stronger laws and accountability. That’s where you come in.

You can make a difference beyond this one case by speaking out on critical animal welfare legislation in Ohio. Here are urgent issues that need your voice:

  • Support Increased Penalties for Animal Cruelty: Far too often, cases of severe neglect and abuse end in minimal punishment. By raising the penalties, Ohio can send a clear message that animal cruelty will not be tolerated.

  • Hold Puppy Mill Breeders Accountable for Animal Abuse: Large-scale, profit-driven breeding operations often keep dogs in inhumane conditions. Stronger oversight and enforcement are needed to protect animals from a lifetime of suffering.

  • Add Animal Offenses as a Disqualifier to Foster & Adopt: Those convicted of cruelty should not be allowed to adopt or foster again. Closing this loophole is essential to keeping vulnerable animals safe.

  • Stop the Irreversible and Painful Practice of Declawing: Declawing is not a simple nail trim—it’s the amputation of the last bone of a cat’s toes, often leading to chronic pain and behavioral issues. Ohio can join other states in banning this outdated and cruel practice.

Every call, every email, and every signature adds up. Together, we can strengthen protections for animals, prevent future suffering, and ensure no pet endures such horrific neglect again.
