Ohio Sees Nation's Largest Decline in Housing Affordability: What This Means for Pet Owners

By Kendall Jang, Staff Writer

Ohio has experienced the largest decline in homeownership affordability in the United States over the past five years, according to a new report from the National Housing Conference (NHC).

As reported by NBC4, homeownership affordability in Ohio dropped by 41% between 2020 and 2025, with rising housing costs significantly outpacing wages.

In Columbus, the income needed to purchase a home increased by 103% during that period. Meanwhile, the percentage of occupations with wages sufficient to afford homeownership fell from 40% to just 9%.

Mansfield experienced an even sharper decline, with homeownership costs increasing by 121%.

How Housing Affordability Affects Ohio's Animals

As housing becomes increasingly expensive, the financial pressures facing Ohio families can also affect their companion animals.

Rising rents, limited pet-friendly housing options, and financial instability can make it more difficult for families to keep their pets. For some households, unexpected housing changes may contribute to the heartbreaking decision to surrender an animal to a shelter or rescue.

These challenges can also place additional pressure on animal welfare organizations already working to provide shelter, veterinary care, and resources to animals in need.

Keeping Families and Pets Together

At Ohio Animal Advocates, we recognize that animal welfare and community well-being are closely connected.

Addressing barriers to pet-friendly housing, expanding access to affordable veterinary care, and supporting pet food assistance programs can help families care for their animals during financial hardship.

Keeping pets with the families who love them benefits both people and animals. As Ohio continues to confront its housing affordability challenges, ensuring that companion animals are considered in conversations about housing stability remains an important part of protecting animal welfare.
