Spring Fling Spotlights: Sunrise Sanctuary Stories That Warm the Heart
This year’s Spring Fling was filled with sunshine, smiles, and stories that remind us why we do what we do. Ohio Animal Advocates was thrilled to visit Sunrise Sanctuary and meet some of their incredible residents — each with their own journey of resilience, love, and second chances.
Two animals who captured everyone’s hearts were Trevor the turkey and Daisy the blind mini horse.
Trevor the Turkey
Trevor came to Sunrise thanks to the compassion of a woman in Dayton, Ohio. After his original family had to leave him behind due to eviction, Trevor found himself alone — until Angie stepped in. She fed and cared for him as best she could before reaching out to Sunrise to give him a permanent home.
Trevor is a friendly, chatty turkey who clearly prefers human company — a sign that he was likely raised apart from other turkeys. But he’s learning! These days, he’s spending more time with his new turkey friends and settling into the flock while still making time for his human admirers.
Daisy the Mini Horse
Daisy arrived in May 2025 after her family, dealing with health issues, could no longer care for her. She is completely blind, possibly from birth or due to a genetic condition — but that doesn’t stop her from forming strong connections.
At Sunrise, Daisy found comfort in JJ, another mini horse. She follows him everywhere, calling for him when she’s unsure of her surroundings, and even nudging him gently for reassurance. JJ, in turn, has taken on the role of protector — showing off with gallops and prancing whenever she’s nearby. Their bond is a powerful example of empathy and companionship.
Looking Ahead: Movement for Donkeys
Sunrise Sanctuary is also planning an exciting new project — a donkey track system for their residents, Willy and Danica. This system provides a continuous walking path designed to encourage natural movement, reduce health risks like obesity and laminitis, and promote enrichment. It’s part of Sunrise’s ongoing effort to create thoughtful, species-specific care for every animal who calls the sanctuary home.
From community events like Spring Fling to behind-the-scenes care and innovation, Sunrise Sanctuary continues to make a lasting impact. Ohio Animal Advocates is proud to highlight their work and the compassionate individuals who make it possible.
