Stop Cruel Cockfighting in Ohio
Earlier this summer, the Friendship Animal Protective League (FAPL), with support from the Lorain County Sheriff’s Department, seized 239 birds connected to an illegal cockfighting operation in Sheffield Township, Ohio. This marks the fourth cockfighting-related seizure in Lorain County this year alone.
Cockfighting is a brutal bloodsport where roosters, fitted with sharp blades called “gaffs,” are forced to fight in pits until one or both are fatally wounded. Beyond the violence of the fights themselves, the seized birds were discovered in appalling conditions—kept in cages caked with mud and waste, with little access to food or water.
“Cockfighting is a brutal and inhumane act,” said FAPL executive director Gregory Willey. “These birds are subjected to extreme suffering for the sake of ‘entertainment’ and profit. We are committed to exposing these operations and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable.”
Why This Matters
Despite being illegal in Ohio, cockfighting continues to surface across the state. Cases like this highlight why Ohio must strengthen animal cruelty laws to better deter and punish those who exploit animals for bloodsport. Current penalties are not strong enough to stop repeat offenders, leaving law enforcement and shelters like FAPL to carry the burden.
