How Rodenticides Threaten Bobcats, Coyotes, & Urban Wildlife

Every time a hawk swoops down on a poisoned mouse or a bobcat catches a sluggish rat, or a coyote scavenges a dying rodent, toxic rodenticides move one step higher up the food chain. The consequences ripple through entire ecosystems, weakening the carnivores our landscapes depend on.

This is the hidden toll of rodenticide use. And it's happening in backyards, farms, and wild spaces across the country.

Project Coyote's State Advocacy Manager, Kiely Smith, will facilitate a conversation with two leading voices in wildlife science and land stewardship:

Dr. Laurel Serieys, Conservation Biologist & Post-Doctoral Researcher at The Ohio State University's Urban Coyote Research Project, conducted groundbreaking research on coyotes and bobcats, which helped build the scientific case for California's restrictions on anticoagulant rodenticides. She will reveal just how deeply these toxins compromise wildlife's immune systems and disease resistance.

Keli Hendricks, Project Coyote Ranching & Farming with Wildlife Project Coordinator, is a wildlife rehabilitator and working ranch manager based in Petaluma, CA. Keli brings firsthand experience in coexistence-based land stewardship. She’ll discuss practical, non-lethal strategies for managing rodents, reducing conflict, and helping ensure carnivores remain healthy and thriving in shared landscapes.

Whether you're a wildlife advocate, homeowner, rancher, or gardener, this conversation will leave you with a clearer picture of the harm rodenticides cause and the real-world solutions that protect wildlife for generations to come.
