Not Without My Dog! Planning for Pet Sheltering during a Disaster

Is your municipality prepared to support pet owners when disaster strikes? From floods to apartment fires, countless emergencies can displace both people and their animals — and many families will not evacuate if they have nowhere safe to take their pets.

After Hurricane Katrina, the PETS Act of 2006 required jurisdictions to include pets in their disaster planning. Nearly 20 years later, many communities still struggle with the logistics of housing animals during emergencies.

This webinar outlines practical considerations and planning strategies for pet sheltering, including co-sheltering models (where people and pets remain together) and mass-intake approaches used by animal shelters (where pets are temporarily housed without their owners). Participants will gain a clearer understanding of the challenges, requirements, and real-world solutions needed to keep both people and pets safe during disasters.
