Bald Eagles Are Soaring Across Ohio
Over the past decade, Ohio has witnessed a remarkable comeback of one of the nation’s most iconic species: the bald eagle. New data tracking verified active bald eagle nests from 2012 to 2025 shows steady, widespread growth across nearly the entire state—an encouraging sign that long-term conservation efforts are working.
A county-by-county analysis reveals that every county in Ohio except one experienced an increase in active bald eagle nests during this period. In most counties, the increase ranged from 1 to 10 new nests, signaling slow but consistent recovery statewide.
Ottawa County Leads the Way
One county stands out dramatically. Ottawa County saw the largest increase by far, jumping from 46 active nests in 2012 to 112 in 2025—an increase of 66 new nests. Located along Lake Erie, Ottawa County’s extensive wetlands, shoreline, and mature tree habitat provide ideal conditions for bald eagles to thrive.
This growth reflects not only strong habitat but decades of coordinated efforts, including legal protections, habitat restoration, reduced pesticide use, and public education around nesting areas.
One County Still Waiting
While the overall picture is overwhelmingly positive, the data also highlights an important gap. Meigs County was the only county in Ohio without a verified active bald eagle nest during this time period. This doesn’t mean eagles will never return there—but it does underscore how uneven habitat access, land use patterns, and environmental pressures can affect wildlife recovery at the local level.
Why This Matters
The bald eagle’s resurgence is more than a feel-good story—it’s a powerful indicator of ecosystem health. As a top predator, bald eagles depend on clean water, healthy fish populations, and intact habitats. Their return signals broader environmental improvements that benefit countless other species, including humans.
At Ohio Animal Advocates, we view this progress as proof that policy, protection, and public engagement matter. When we invest in wildlife protections and habitat conservation, recovery is possible—even for species once pushed to the brink.

Looking Ahead
Ohio’s bald eagle population is a reminder of what’s possible when conservation is taken seriously and sustained over time. The challenge now is to protect these gains, ensure nesting areas remain safe, and continue restoring habitats—especially in areas that haven’t yet seen the same success.
Bald eagles are soaring again across Ohio. Our responsibility is to make sure they stay there.
