OAA Book of the Month - Denali’s New Life
By Erin Lawson, Operations Director
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Ohio Animal Advocates (OAA) knows that domestic violence affects animals too. This month’s book highlights a book that follows the true story of a dog named Denali, a dog that was severely impacted by domestic violence but found a new lease on life.
Denali’s New Life, written by Karey Burek, PhD, and the Animal Welfare Institute, is written for young readers but is sure to be loved by all ages. The main character, Denali, is a pup who found herself in a house fire after the humans in her home had an argument. Denali was pulled from the flames by firefighters, treated by veterinarians for her injuries, and then her new life began. She found the perfect human (the author of the book) to help her recover and gain back her confidence; now she helps others heal in her new role as a service dog. Denali’s journey teaches us that healing happens best when surrounded by those who provide love, safety and support. Her story is truly inspiring, and it teaches us about the importance of being kind.
Why we love it
OAA knows that domestic violence affects more than people, which is why we focus on bringing attention to the link between human and animal violence. Denali’s story is a testament to that. But Denali was lucky. She found humans that gave her the environment and patience to become her best self, help others, and become an ambassador for domestic violence survivors. Since this book is geared towards young readers, we love the foundation it helps build within our younger audiences to show kindness and patience.
