A Virginia man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to animal cruelty and computer fraud charges involving the torture of cats to solicit donations through social media.
According to Courthouse News Service, Rodney Travis Jr., 27, intentionally injured cats and falsely portrayed them as suffering from serious illnesses, including cancer, on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. Prosecutors linked Travis to more than $400,000 in fraudulent donations collected since 2023.
Prosecutors described the sentence as the harshest animal abuse penalty in Virginia's history.
Investigation Reveals Widespread Animal Cruelty
Authorities identified at least 19 cats that Travis abused, although investigators believe there may be additional victims.
The investigation gained momentum after concerned individuals across the United States and internationally documented suspicious social media activity and alerted law enforcement.
During a search of Travis' apartment, authorities rescued six cats, five of which survived. One cat, Vivi, died while being transported for veterinary treatment after suffering severe head injuries.
Investigators also discovered evidence of animal abuse and materials allegedly used to carry out the fraudulent fundraising scheme.
Rescue Advocates Call for Stronger Protections
Following the sentencing, animal welfare advocates emphasized the need for better safeguards to prevent individuals with histories of animal cruelty from adopting animals.
Brandi Cobb, an adoption coordinator with Cats Cradle, expressed hope that the case would encourage Virginia lawmakers to establish a statewide animal abuse database to help shelters and rescue organizations screen potential adopters.
One surviving cat, now named Sisu, was adopted by Katherine Drummond of Richardsons Rescue and is reportedly thriving after recovering from multiple fractures.
