Ohio Ranks Among States With Most Reported Animal Abuse-Related Violence Cases

Ohio ranks among the states with the highest number of reported cases involving both animal cruelty and other forms of violence, according to a new analysis from the National Link Coalition.
The August 2026 LINK-Letter from the National Link Coalition reviewed 1,066 U.S. news reports involving animal cruelty alongside crimes such as domestic violence, child abuse, homicide and other offenses between April 2012 and July 2026. Ohio had 63 reported cases, tying California for fourth-highest in the country, behind Florida, Texas and New York.
Ohio was also among the leading states in reported cases connecting animal abuse and domestic violence. The report found that Florida, Texas, New York, Ohio and California accounted for a significant share of the 323 cases involving both forms of violence. Ohio was also among the states with the highest reported numbers involving animal cruelty and child abuse.
Animal Abuse Can Be a Warning Sign
The findings reinforce what advocates increasingly recognize as “The Link” — the connection between animal cruelty and violence toward people. Animal abuse can occur alongside domestic violence, child maltreatment and other crimes, making collaboration among animal welfare, law enforcement and human services professionals particularly important.
The National Link Coalition cautions that its analysis is informal and based on cases appearing in news media, meaning the rankings should not be interpreted as evidence that violence is inherently more prevalent in Ohio than in other states. Differences in reporting, enforcement and media coverage may all influence the numbers.
Still, Ohio's presence near the top of several categories underscores the importance of recognizing animal cruelty not only as an animal welfare issue, but as a potential indicator of broader violence within families and communities.
