Animal Charity of Ohio Suspends Humane Investigations and Intakes Amid Funding Crisis

Animal Charity of Ohio has suspended its humane investigations and animal intakes, citing financial and capacity challenges that organization leaders say have made it impossible to continue the services for now.

The organization had already suspended animal control services in June, but continued conducting humane investigations and accepting animals from abuse and neglect cases. After what leaders described as a busy summer of rescues, those services have now also been placed on hold.

Animal Charity currently has 224 animals in its care and says it has reached capacity. The organization estimates it needs approximately $1.8 million annually to operate and relies on donations and fundraising rather than government funding.

A Critical Gap for Mahoning County

The suspension is particularly significant because Animal Charity is the only organization in Mahoning County dedicated to conducting humane investigations and sheltering animals removed from abuse and neglect situations.

Until services resume, residents who suspect animal cruelty or neglect are being directed to contact their local police department or the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office.

County officials and Animal Charity leaders have discussed potential solutions, including possible public funding, but no agreement has been reached. County officials have said they need additional information before committing taxpayer dollars, while Animal Charity maintains that detailed financial information has been provided.

Animal Charity says its immediate focus is finding homes for animals currently in its care to increase capacity and ultimately resume humane investigations and intakes.

The situation highlights the essential role humane organizations play in enforcing Ohio’s animal protection laws, and the consequences for animals and communities when those organizations lack the resources needed to continue their work.
