Research confirms that concern for the safety or well-being of an animal is often a barrier to seeking safety for domestic violence victims. The vast majority of states now have protective order laws that recognize the need to protect companion animals in this context. But what if the animal in need of shelter and legal protection from domestic violence is a horse? Unique issues arise, including the types of services that might be available for horses, whether there are adequate emergency and transitional sheltering options available, and even whether a horse’s legal classification as “companion” or “pet” rather than as “livestock,” can affect options available to survivors trying to keep their horse safe from an abuser. This webinar will provide an overview of key legal issues in this emerging area, as well as provide safety planning, best practices, recommendations, and resources to support domestic violence survivors with horses.
