Affordable Housing Wins Are Good for People and Their Pets

Thanks to a recent advocacy update from the Coalition on Homelessness and Housing in Ohio (COHHIO), we are pleased to report that Congress recently passed the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act. This is the most comprehensive federal housing legislation in more than two decades. The bipartisan law aims to expand affordable housing, improve access to housing assistance, and increase housing supply.

For animal advocates, this is encouraging news. Housing instability is one of the many reasons people are forced to surrender beloved pets. Many individuals experiencing homelessness cannot find pet-friendly housing or shelters, leaving them with an impossible choice between a safe place to stay and keeping their companion animal.

That's why the Providing for Unhoused People and Pets (PUPP) Act deserves attention. The bill would provide grants to help homeless shelters accommodate pets, allowing people and their animals to remain together while accessing services. It builds on the successful model established by the PAWS Act, which helps domestic violence shelters provide safe housing for survivors with pets.

Affordable housing is an important step toward stronger communities. By also investing in pet-friendly shelter programs through the PUPP Act, lawmakers can help ensure that no one has to choose between a roof over their head and the pet who depends on them.
