ASPCA Announces Up to $14 Million in Grants for Shelters and Spay/Neuter Clinics

Animal shelters and spay/neuter providers across the country have an opportunity to secure significant funding this year through a new grant program from the ASPCA.

The ASPCA has announced that it will award up to $14 million in grants to support shelters and spay/neuter clinics serving vulnerable animals throughout the United States. The funding is intended to help organizations address some of the most pressing challenges facing animal welfare today, including shelter capacity needs and the ongoing shortage of accessible spay/neuter services.

Applications opened June 1st and will remain open through June 26, 2026.

Funding Categories

Organizations may apply for funding in one of five categories:

Shelter Grants

  • Critical Shelter Infrastructure

  • Strengthening Shelter Essentials

Spay/Neuter Grants

  • Increasing Spay/Neuter Surgeries

  • Major Capital Projects that Increase Spay/Neuter Capacity

  • Special Projects that Increase Spay/Neuter Capacity

Grant awards will range from $10,000 to $500,000, depending on the category and project scope.

Addressing Urgent Animal Welfare Needs

Animal welfare organizations nationwide continue to face growing challenges, including increased shelter intake, limited veterinary resources, staffing shortages, aging facilities, and barriers to accessing affordable spay/neuter services.

Expanding spay/neuter capacity remains one of the most effective strategies for reducing pet overpopulation, preventing unwanted litters, and decreasing the number of animals entering shelters. At the same time, investments in shelter infrastructure and essential resources can help organizations improve animal care, enhance community services, and better respond to emergencies.

The ASPCA's grant program recognizes that organizations have different needs and allows applicants to focus on the area that would have the greatest impact on their communities.

Important Application Information

The ASPCA will consider only one application per organization, and applicants may apply for only one funding category.

Organizations should carefully review the eligibility requirements and select the category that best aligns with their most urgent priorities. Key dates include:

  • Application period: June 1–26, 2026

  • Application status updates: On or around August 24, 2026

  • Final funding decisions: On or before October 21, 2026

Ohio Organizations Encouraged to Apply

Ohio shelters, humane societies, low-cost veterinary clinics, and spay/neuter providers play a critical role in protecting animals and supporting pet owners throughout the state. This funding opportunity could help organizations expand services, improve facilities, increase surgical capacity, and better meet the needs of their communities.

Organizations interested in applying should review the ASPCA's grant guidelines as soon as possible, as the application window closes on June 26.

Investments in shelters and spay/neuter programs have lasting impacts, not only for animals, but also for the people and communities who care about them.
