Beaver Deceiver Saves Lives in Vermont
In Orange, Vermont, beavers have been given a chance to thrive thanks to an innovative flow device known as a “beaver deceiver.” Installed by Beaver Deceivers LLC and funded primarily by In Defense of Animals (IDA), the device allows beavers to remain in their natural habitat while also preventing flooding that can damage roads and culverts.
This project marks a critical shift away from the area’s grim history of underwater trapping, a cruel practice that could leave beavers suffering for up to nine minutes before drowning. The change comes after the devastating 2023 floods, which underscored the importance of sustainable solutions to water management.
Not only does the beaver deceiver save lives, it also saves money. The device cost about $4,000 — a fraction of the $13,000 the state previously spent to kill beavers and destroy their dam at the very same site.
“Beavers are powerful ecosystem protectors — not pests,” said IDA Wild Animals Campaigner Katie Nolan. “Instead of destroying their dams and killing them, we now have the opportunity to protect human infrastructure and beaver lives at the same time.”
Beavers play a vital role in creating wetlands, improving water quality, and supporting biodiversity. This project shows how compassion and ingenuity can go hand-in-hand to protect both wildlife and communities.
Take Action in Ohio
Here in Ohio, wildlife face many of the same threats. OAA is calling on advocates to push back against outdated, inhumane practices that harm animals under the guise of management.
Please support our state action alert: Speak Out Against Wildlife Killing Contests. Just like Vermont’s success with coexistence, Ohio has an opportunity to promote humane, science-based approaches that protect animals and people alike.
Your voice matters. Together, we can stand up for wildlife and encourage our communities to embrace compassion and innovation.
Your voice matters. Together, we can hold systems accountable and work toward a safer, more compassionate Ohio—for people and pets.
