Animal Cruelty on the Rise: Help Us Help Them
It seems every month we hear about horrific cruelty to animals in the media in Ohio this year. From an ESA cat freezing to death on Summit Lake to more than a hundred farm animals being hoarded by a veterinarian in Sandusky, animal cruelty must be stopped.
H5N1 Avian Influenza in Cats: What Animal Welfare Organizations Need to Know Now
Cats are now part of the story.
While avian influenza (H5N1) has long been a threat to bird populations, a disturbing development has emerged: domestic cats across multiple U.S. states have tested positive for the virus. For shelters, rescues, community cat groups, and access-to-care clinics, this means shifting protocols, staying informed, and protecting both animals and staff.
Ohio’s Puppy Mill Crisis: Why We Must Hold the ODA Accountable
Ohio is at a breaking point when it comes to protecting dogs trapped in the abusive world of puppy mills. Despite clear laws meant to safeguard animal welfare, our state government continues to turn a blind eye to suffering—allowing breeders to perform painful surgeries, skip veterinary care, and profit off cruelty.
Fix For Life: A New Chapter in Spay/Neuter Advocacy
As the United Spay Alliance State Leader for Ohio, we’re proud to introduce a powerful new message we’re embracing across the country: Fix For Life.
At its core, this is more than a tagline—it’s a call to action. Because fixing isn’t just a procedure—it’s a promise. A promise of health, safety, and compassion for every animal in every community.
Spring Fling Spotlights: Sunrise Sanctuary Stories That Warm the Heart
This year’s Spring Fling was filled with sunshine, smiles, and stories that remind us why we do what we do. Ohio Animal Advocates was thrilled to visit Sunrise Sanctuary and meet some of their incredible residents — each with their own journey of resilience, love, and second chances.
Two animals who captured everyone’s hearts were Trevor the turkey and Daisy the blind mini horse.
Silver Fox Lake and the Rising Need for Sanctuaries in Ohio
In the spring of 2025, a striking silver fox captured the attention of Medina County residents—and raised a red flag for wildlife advocates. The animal, later named Lake, was not just beautiful, he was out of place.
Unlike Ohio’s native red and gray foxes, Lake’s dark, shimmering coat marked him as a melanistic or “silver” fox—a trait rarely seen in the wild, but common in captive-bred foxes raised to be pets. His calm behavior around humans and lack of fear signaled something else: this was no wild animal. Lake had been bred and likely raised in captivity.
And, like many exotic pets, he had been abandoned.
“My Dog is My Home”: Keeping Families Together Through Housing Insecurity
In a powerful episode of The Animal Welfare Junction podcast, host Dr. Michelle Gonzalez takes listeners inside the 10th Anniversary celebration of My Dog is My Home and Found House Interfaith Housing Network—two organizations leading the way in supporting people experiencing homelessness with their beloved pets.
Tell Governor Dewine to Hold ODA Accountable for Abuse of Dogs in Ohio's Puppy Mills
OAA strives to make Ohio a place where all animals are protected from cruelty, abuse, and neglect. Currently, thousands of innocent puppies and breeding dogs are vulnerable to the inhumanities of puppy mills, and we need your help to change this.
The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) has continuously failed to control the abusive puppy mill industry in Ohio and to hold the abusers accountable. Breeders disregard the health of their dogs to keep costs low and maximize their profits. According to Humane World research, most puppies sold in pet stores and through online retailers are born in puppy mills.
Survivors Deserve Stability: Protecting the Ohio Housing Trust Fund
In April 2025, the Ohio Domestic Violence Network (ODVN) launched its inaugural Survivor Voices Council, a transformative initiative supported by a $200,000 grant from the Ohio Housing Trust Fund (OHTF). This funding underscores the critical role OHTF plays in supporting life-saving programs for Ohioans facing domestic violence and housing insecurity.
Ohio Species Spotlight: Sandhill Crane
The Sandhill Crane is a striking, tall bird standing 3 to 4 feet high with a wingspan of up to 6.5 feet. It’s recognized by its long legs, long neck, grayish-brown feathers, and distinctive red crown on its head. These cranes are known for their trumpeting calls that echo across wetlands and open fields, especially when traveling in large migratory flocks.
Support the Child and Animal Abuse Detection and Reporting Act
At Ohio Animal Advocates, we believe that protecting animals and protecting children go hand in hand. That’s why we are urging support for H.R. 712 – the Child and Animal Abuse Detection and Reporting Act—a bipartisan bill that seeks to improve how we track and respond to child abuse cases by including animal abuse as a critical data point.
