Q&A with Pets in Need of Cincinnati Executive Director Pam McKie: Bridging Human Services and Animal Welfare
For more than 40 years, Pam McKie worked in human services, helping vulnerable children, families, and communities access the support they needed to thrive. Today, she brings that same passion and expertise to animal welfare as Executive Director of Pets in Need of Cincinnati, a nonprofit veterinary clinic dedicated to serving low-income and vulnerable pet owners.
The Link Between Animal Abuse and Human Violence Continues to Gain Attention Worldwide
For decades, animal advocates, social workers, law enforcement professionals, veterinarians, and domestic violence experts have recognized an important pattern: violence toward animals often does not occur in isolation.
Campus Cats Spark Debate at Northern Kentucky University
A group of cats living outside the Landrum Academic Center at Northern Kentucky University has recently become the center of an unexpected campus debate—one that highlights broader questions about how communities manage free-roaming cats.
For several years, students at NKU have been caring for a small group of cats that appeared near the building. What began with simple acts of kindness—leaving out food and water for an orange tabby named Morris—gradually evolved into a more organized effort to support the animals.
Kind News: Humane Education That Inspires the Next Generation of Animal Advocates
At Ohio Animal Advocates, we often talk about laws, policies, and programs that protect animals. But one of the most powerful tools for improving animal welfare starts much earlier: education.
Helping children develop empathy toward animals can shape the way they interact with the world for the rest of their lives. That’s where Kind News™, a humane education magazine published by RedRover, comes in.

Good News for Housing and Homeless Services in Ohio
In an important advocacy win, with meaningful implications for people and animals across Ohio, Congress has passed a government funding bill that includes significant new investments in housing and homelessness programs. This reverses earlier proposals that would have cut critical support. This bipartisan legislation ends the brief government shutdown and provides $77.3 billion in funding for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in Fiscal Year 2026, including protections for the Continuum of Care (CoC) program — the backbone of homeless services nationwide.
Nevada Expands Pet-Inclusive Housing Protections with New Law
Nevada has taken a major step forward for pet-inclusive housing. On May 31, 2025, Governor Joe Lombardo signed Senate Bill 166 (SB 166) into law—expanding protections for renters and families with pets across the state.
Cruelty in Puppy Mills: A Call to Action
The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) has continuously failed to control the abusive puppy mill industry in Ohio and to hold the abusers accountable. Commercial dog breeders disregard the health of their dogs to keep costs low and maximize their profits. According to Humane World for Animals, most puppies sold in pet stores and through online retailers are born in puppy mills. Additionally, the 2025 Horrible Hundred report ranks Ohio as the second worst state in the nation regarding the care of dogs in puppy mills, with 16 of the nation's worst puppy mills located in our state.
Pet-Friendly Housing Program Grant Opportunity
The Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) is now accepting applications for the FY 2025 Emergency and Transitional Pet Shelter and Housing Assistance for Victims of Domestic Violence Program. This competitive grant offers up to $500,000 per award to help create or expand pet-friendly housing for survivors of domestic violence.
Four Ohio Shelters Receive Grants to Keep Pets and Families Together
When survivors of domestic violence or individuals experiencing homelessness are forced to flee unsafe or unstable conditions, they often face a heartbreaking choice: seek safety, or stay with their beloved pets. For many, that bond is too strong to break — and unfortunately, many shelters aren't equipped to house animals alongside people. But that’s changing, thanks to lifesaving initiatives like RedRover’s Safe Housing program.
Navigating Pet Loss: Support, Healing, and Honoring the Bond
Losing a pet is never easy. Whether they were by your side for one year or fifteen, their absence leaves an undeniable void. Pets are family — companions, protectors, best friends, and for many, a source of unconditional love. Grief after the death of a beloved animal is natural and deeply personal, and there's no "right" way to process that pain.
